Marc leaps into the air in Kinect Adventures
So yesterday was the launch day for Microsoft’s motion camera controller, Kinect. I wasn’t the first person on the block to get device for my Xbox 360, but my good Friend Marc did. Keep in mind this is a whole new way to play video games. This is his review…..
From the start: When I first plugged kinect in, I had download an update which was very quick. second came the calibration. The calibration was pretty easy, and was a good tool to see if your area is roomy enough for kinect yet or not. I was standing about 6 feet away from the TV/Kinect, and found that to be enough. After the calibration, you are given a short tutorial on how to use kinect, and some of the gestures you will be using.
The interface: The interface is pretty simple. Right now, you do not have many options in the kinect hub, but I’m certain that will change as Kinect grows. The majority of your controls at the “Kinect hub” will be through voice. These voice commands are really fun, and work extremely well. You can also set up facial recognition with Kinect through the hub which also seemed to work pretty well. Sometimes, I felt that the menus could have been done a little smoother, but honestly, once I got the hang of it, it all became pretty second nature.
Some cool features: One of the cool features I found was that the Kinect sits on a motor. The motor turns the camera to follow you where you go, and auto adjust for the best angle to view you at. This worked extremely well. The camera, while it is web cam quality, it is good web cam quality. the problem that all web cam type cameras face: horrible picture in low light. While kinect worked good in my average light setting, I definitely recommend lighting your play space very well. The Kinect also comes with a video chat feature which lets you chat VIA: Xbox to Xbox or Xbox to MSN (computer) and it works really well. The camera moves with you if you move, and it also zooms in on you automatically.
Adventures/Launch titles: Lets face it, the one thing the Kinect is lacking with is launch titles. While Adventures (the game that comes with kinect) was fun, accurate, and quite a work out, this game (and the other launch games) symbolize more of the Wii’s territory. I believe Microsoft did this to get people into kinect a little more casually first. It makes sense, but I honestly cant wait for some of the cooler titles like the Star Wars game. One cool thing I liked about Adventures is that it takes pictures of you while you play, and uploads them to your kinect profile online.
The verdict: Kinect is definitely a powerful piece of technology. It holds its own against the PS Move and the Wii however I honestly think it is something completely different than those. As long as Microsoft stands by Kinect and releases more options and content for it, this will shape out to be quite a fun piece of tech.
Is it for you? Well if you want to have some fun, and good party game, and have the space for it, I think so. There are so many possibilities with this, and I can only hope that Microsoft continues to work on it with software tweaks and improved UI.
